    In case it's useful to others, I managed to sort late last night by a circuitous route:

    Eventually found a combination that worked on iOS as a password to create an account. Don't know if this means that the algorithm checking for password conformity is incorrect or if I just caught the server at a good moment.

    This password wasn't then accepted for login, but I did at least have an account. When I used "forgot password", I was able to use the link on MacOS safari to set the password to one of those I'd originally had rejected in the iOS app.

    Hopefully I'm now sorted. Pivo hardware seems very nice on first use. I'm sure this account creation bug will be fixed soon - a small thing seriously impacting an otherwise very good experience.
